Pope Francis and the Knights

SO many U.S. Knights of Columbus watched with joy when Pope Francis made his Apostolic Visit to the Philippines last January 2015. The Supreme Coun- cil website (kofc.org) gave space to articles and pho- tos of the papal trip, and we were especially anxious for the Holy Father to visit Pope Francis Center in Palo (Leyte), where local Philip- pine Knights had set out boats from the Livelihood Project. In the wake of Ty- phoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the K of C Livelihood Proj- ect has provided 200 fishing boats, built by needy labor- ers, to fishermen who lost their vessels in the Novem- ber 2013 devastating storm.
Bad weather during the pope’s visit to Leyte kept him from blessings the boats as planned, but we Knights know that this project re- mains close to the heart of the Holy Father. Based upon immediate, hands-on help for those in need, the Livelihood Project is an ex- ample of neighbor helping neighbor, with assistance from the Supreme Council.
American Knights were blessed to get their own personal look at Pope Francis this past Septem- ber, when the Holy Father landed for his first visit to the United States. At each location where the pope of- fered Mass – Washington, New York and Philadelphia – Knights were on hand to provide volunteer and finan- cial assistance. We stood as the strong right arm of the Church and the Holy Father.
My family and I were blessed to be in close prox- imity to the Holy Father during his two days in Phila- delphia, where he closed the weeklong events of the World Meeting of Families. Beingnearthepopewasa great thrill, especially for my two boys, who brought pic- tures back to their Catholic schools.
As the pope spoke about care for the needy, patience in home life, and hope for the future, I had an image of Father McGivney in my mind. Thesearetheveryvaluesand virtues he sought to promote and instill into his Knights when he founded the Order in 1882. I could see Pope Fran- cis and Father McGivney as kindred spirits, united in the Catholic faith and in service to the most needy.
Regarding Father Mc- Givney’s cause for saint- hood, I will simply say that the Vatican has asked us to find and submit another miracle. From what the CongregationoftheCauses of Saints has told us, it clear that we now have a great opportunity for every- one reading these words to pray for the intercession of Father McGivney in all their many needs, espe- cially in serious medical cases. As Supreme Knight Carl Anderson stressed at the Supreme Convention in Philadelphia last August, every Knight and his family members must be united in prayer to and for Father McGivney, and they must report any favors received through his intercession.
It is very likely that the Philippines, as a strong Catholic country, will be the place where a miracle will occur. But it starts with prayer today!
