Protector of Christian Family Life

We know today there are many attacks on family life and cultural trends to separate children from parents. The recently passed RH Bill that lays the groundwork for widespread contraception and immoral sexual education of youngsters is just one example in the Philippines.

Yet the Catholic family has always been a target of groups and governments, from the Roman Empire to now. Through it all, the Church and the family based on the Gospel and the sacraments have survived.

In Father McGivney’s day, late 19th century America, threats to Catholic family life were persistent. In January 1882, the year he founded the Knights of Columbus, Father McGivney appeared in New Haven probate court to plead the case of young Alfred Downes and his widowed mother. After her husband’s death at
a young age, Mrs. Downes was left with little money and the responsibility of providing for her children. The city of New Haven required a guardian to post a bond to support the children, or else they would be taken from the mother and given to a “good family” who would likely raise them in the Protestant faith.

Father McGivney knew the Downes family from his parish and would not stand by to see the children separated. So he stood up in court – an unusual place for a Catholic priest of that era to speak – and claimed guardianship of young Alfred based on the bond posted by a local Catholic businessman. Alfred remained with his mother and siblings, and later graduated from Yale University Law School to became a success in life.

This was just one of many times that Father McGivney laid his own name and reputation on the line for the sake of his people. The Knights of Columbus insurance program was devised by Father McGivney with the preservation of the Catholic family in mind. With male breadwinners often dying young, Father McGivney wanted to give families financial security through a fraternal benefit society, in which brother Knights
would provide for the needs of brother Knights and their bereaved families. He knew that families needed financial security to grow, thrive and provide for children, even in difficult times.

All Catholics are urged to pray for Father McGivney’s intercession today for the needs of their families. When death strikes or tragedy takes its toll, families have a wise and compassionate helper in Father McGivney. When the breadwinner loses employment, or becomes too ill to work, go to Father McGivney
for assistance.

The Father McGivney pilgrim statue program has been launched in all three jurisdictions of the Philippines. When the blessed image of the Knights of Columbus founder comes to your area, go out with greetings, and offer your petitions and prayers. You have an advocate for your family in all setbacks, challenges and calamities. Report any favors received to the Father McGivney Office in Manila.

Venerable Father McGivney, intercede for us!
