Base Path to Priesthood

As a seminarian preparing for the priesthood, Michael McGivney studied hard and was a fine student, but he also made time for recreation. Baseball was his preferred sport, and the young McGivney was known to bat fourth, the cleanup position, and play the outfield.

Facts such as these add an interesting human dimension to McGivney’s profile, and show that this priest who is being considered for sainthood was a down-to-earth man who enjoyed games and laughter. They also give us a bridge which reaches from McGivney’s times to our own, and offers a way for us to connect with him on a human level.

The need for a connection with Father McGivney is especially evident when we ask what relevance an American priest from the 19th century can have to those in the Philippines, where his cause for canonization is being promoted with new vigor. How can Father McGivney speak to the hearts of Filipinos today?

The connection lies in two factors that guided Father McGivney’s priestly ministry. First, he was concerned with the life and the future of young people, and second, he founded the Knights of Columbus to protect Catholic families in their times of greatest need. These two factors are very much in keeping with Filipino culture, which is rich with young people and the traditions of family life.

Known as Apostle to the Young and Protector of Christian Family Life, this American priest can be embraced by Filipinos as one of their own. Our youth need guidance to seek the way of virtue, and our family life needs protection from the RH Bill and other cultural and political attacks.

Father McGivney, pray for us and guide us in all the difficulties of life. (Brian Caulfield)
